Studies on the Harzard of the Immobility of the Hopitalized Patients

Abstract
The bad influences of bed rest on cardiovascular and gastrointestinal systems were evaluated on the basis of a study done on ninety patients who were treated with bed rest for, three days or more, as a part of their care in both the Department of Medicine, and the Department of
Surgery at Maryknoll Hospital from September 1969 to June 1970.
The results of the evaluated were as follows:
1. Orthostatic hypotension occurred most frequently in the patients with fractures, which needed,
bed rest for a long period of time. Thrombophlebitis or phlebothrombosis occurred also with high incidence in the patients who had bed rest for a long time.
2. Constipation was noted most frequently in the patients who were treated with a long period
of bad rest, an in adequate diet, and a lack of exercise, especially in the old age group.
From this evaluation the author is firmly convinced in recommending that exercise, should be encouraged as early as possible to prevent the various complications caused by a long period of bed rest.
